Resource Details
Using authentic video clips and music to convey the concepts and rhythms of African Dance, progression is made through using examples of men's and women's chores to inspire creative movement, building up gradually to a 'whole class' dance.
With rich multimedia resources and comprehensive lesson plans, considerable time is saved for busy teachers wishing to put African Dance in the PE curriculum. Children are engaged with realistic, non-stereotypical movement images of a different culture, that are simple enough for them to copy and translate into their own dance motifs, whilst also supporting cross curricular Citizenship objectives.

"Your African Dance Pack was used brilliantly in Class 4 by Marilyn. I know the children involved worked with it for a whole half term so enthusiastically. This culminated in a superb dance for the whole school and parents too. They had created their own interpretation of village life. It brought tears to my eyes!! To see some of the less enthusiastic boys in particular really living in the dance and freely moving to the fab music was fabulous". - Neen Jones, Teacher, Inkberrow First School
"The video clips and music allowed me to give the children an effective insight into African dance and the daily chores carried out by Zambians, without having any prior knowledge. They allowed the children individual interpretation whilst following specific success criteria. They are easy to just 'pick up and go'. The resources are a great help!" - Kerry Law, Yr6 Class Teacher, St Nicholas Middle School.
"It's really super...can't wait to use it with my Yr 5/6 class" - Catharine Jessiman, Headteacher, West Coker CE VC Primary School.
Childrens' Comments
"When we did our Zambian dancing as a class P.E. project each child has its own opinions of what the experience had on them. So here are a few descriptions of what they thought."
Stephanie: "Scary but cool and one of the most fantastic feelings I have ever had. Plus my favourite bit was the celebration because of all the moves that the Zambians did!"
Samuel: "I loved rehearsing and practising and it was the best when we did it for real! The costumes were great and my best moment was the celebration part of it!"
Byrony: "It was very fun and it was extremelyenjoyable. I never knew that Zambians did so much work each day!"
Jack: "It was fun because you learned how to do Zambian dancing. My favourite bit was actually doing it for the parents on the big day!"
Olivia: "I really enjoyed it; it was a new experience for me. I finally got the hang of it because Mrs Collins was very helpful and understandable. My favourite part was the celebration because it showed how much the Zambians like dancing!"
Gregor: "I thought it was very good and fun. My funniest bit was when I accidentally lost my pump in front of the audience! But luckily they didn't see!"
Sophie: "It was cool and my favourite bit was the celebration because we learned what the Zambians do to celebrate!"
Amy: "It was quite scary doing it in front of the parents because they kept laughing at me and my dress, even though I thought it was beautiful!"
Alex: "It was weird because of all those people staring at me my favourite was the chores we danced!"
Lewis: "I liked the music best!"
